The Diary of Anne Frank (synopsis from Dramatists Play Service) – In this transcendently powerful new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, Anne Frank emerges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl, who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit and determination. An impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence—their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief. Each day of these two dark years, Anne's voice shines through: "When I write I shake off all my cares. But I want to achieve more than that. I want to be useful and bring enjoyment to all people, even those I've never met. I want to go on living even after my death." This is a new adaptation for a new generation. Cheaper By the Dozen (SSP Family Series) (synopsis from Dramatic Publishing) - Suppose you're an attractive high-school girl and you're not only a member of a large and unique family but your father is, in fact, one of the great pioneers of industrial efficiency. Then suppose he decides, for no apparent reason, to apply his unorthodox methods to you and to the rest of your big family. The results are terribly embarrassing, funny and—it must be admitted—extremely effective! To Anne, however, the chief effect seems to be that of making them seem ridiculous to everyone else at school—especially to the boys! Dad pushes ahead with better organization for his large and delightful family. He puts up a chart for the young people to initial after completing each household task, uses a rung as an imaginary bathtub to demonstrate how to take a really efficient bath and appoints a utilities officer to levy fines on wasters of electricity. While the situations are often uproarious, there's a serious reason. Dad has a heart condition that he's keeping secret. The children don't understand them. Anne, the oldest, rebels. Both Dad and she are miserable at the lack of understanding between them. Then in a deft and moving scene, Dad becomes aware of how much Anne has grown up. MAR 20-21-22 & MAR 27-28-29, 2026
Girl’s Weekend (synopsis from Dramatic Publishing) - In this lightning-quick farce, four women travel to Dot’s Northwoods cabin to consume copious amounts of wine, laugh at their lives, trade stories and chat about their book club’s latest selection. However, after the third case of wine comes through the door, it becomes clear there will be more stewing than reviewing. Carol, who is monitoring her temperature for the best “window of opportunity” to get pregnant, gets a ride to the cabin from her husband, Rick, who is hoping the “time is right” for a quick tryst. She sends him home, frustrated, in a snowstorm, only to discover that her temperature shows she IS ready, and calls him to drive back and hide out in a shed until she can sneak him in with a special porchlight signal. Meg, recently widowed, is having a secret affair with Dot’s son, only to find he has shown up at the cabin unexpectedly and wants to further their relationship in stealth. Meg sends him to hide in a boathouse until he sees her special porchlight signal and the coast is clear to rejoin her in the cabin. Ellie, the youngest and Meg’s daughter, would rather not be a part of the weekend with her “elders” and meets a young townie, inviting him to hide out in a barn. When he sees her special porchlight signal, he climbs into her bedroom window and sneaks her out to a local bar after the other ladies
retire. The only obstacle to each of the ladies’ secret endeavors is Dot, who wants to stay up all night and party with the girls. So they make sure they ply her with plenty of party favors, and Dot proceeds to pass out. The ladies move Dot’s lifeless body from floor to closet to room, as the bottles tip up, the secrets spill out and the men sneak in. The madcap, door-slamming chaos comes to a head when Dot wakes up and discovers her girls’ weekend is full of men! MAY 8-9-10 & MAY 15-16-17, 2026
Gypsy (synopsis from Concord) – Regarded by many theatre professionals as the finest musical ever created, Gypsy is the ultimate tale of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughters’ success – while secretly yearning for her own. Set all across America in the 1920s and 30s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born, Arthur Laurents’ landmark show explores the world of two-bit show business with brass, humor, heart and sophistication. The celebrated score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim boasts one glorious hit after another, including “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” Let Me Entertain You,” “Some People,” “You’ll Never Get Away from Me,” “ If Momma Was Married,” “all I Need Is the Girl,” “You Gotta Get a Gimmick,” “Small World,” and “Together Wherever We Go.” JUL 10-11-12 & JUL 17-18-19, 2026
Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery (synopsis from Concord) – Get your deerstalker cap on – the plays afoot! Comedic genius Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo) transforms Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic The Hound of the Baskervilles into a murderously funny adventure. Sherlock Holmes is on the case. The male heirs of the Baskerville line are being dispatched one by one. To find their ingenious killer, Holmes and Watson must brave the desolate moors before a family curse dooms its newest heir. Watch as our intrepid investigators try to escape a dizzying web of clues, silly accents, disguises, and deceit as five actors deftly portray more than forty characters. Does a wild hellhound prowl the moors of Devonshire? Can our heroes discover the truth in time? Join the fun and see how are from elementary the truth can be.

Beetlejuice Jr (SSP Family Series) (synopsis from MTI) - It's our show now, kid. The ghost-with-the-most comes to the stage in Beetlejuice JR., the frightfully funny musical based on the beloved motion picture turned Broadway phenomenon. Lydia Deetz is a strange and unusual teenager, still grieving the loss of her mother and obsessed with the whole “being dead thing.” Lucky for Lydia, she and her father move to a new house haunted by a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice, a delightful demon with a real zest for life. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away anyone with a pulse, this double-crossing specter shows his true stripes, unleashing a (Nether)world of pandemonium. With music and lyrics by Tony Award- nominee Eddie Perfect and a book by Tony Award-nominated pair Anthony King and Scott Brown, Beetlejuice was nominated for eight 2019 Tony Awards including Best New Musical. A viral "sucks-yes" on social media, this musical struck a chord with young theatre lovers who adored its unabashed humor and emotional honesty. Created for the generation that made it a hit, Beetlejuice JR. is a wacky theatrical party for all! OCT 9-10-11 & OCT 16-17-18, 2026

AUDITION INFORMATION FOR SSP'S 2025 HOLIDAY SHOW
CONEY ISLAND
CHRISTMAS
Directors Rachel Loper and John H. Hulse have announced open auditions for Second Street Players’ 2025 holiday show, Coney Island Christmas. Auditions will be held Friday, September 5 and Saturday, September 6 at 6:00p at SSP’s Riverfront Theater, 2 S. Walnut St; Milford, DE.
Auditions will consist of readings from the script. The show is performed by a cast of actors ages 10 and up. The cast should be available for technical rehearsals, which are scheduled for November 16 - 20, and November 23 - 25, 2025, and must also be available for all performances, which are November 28, 29, 30, December 5, 6, and 7, 2025.
Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies weaves together nostalgia, music, and merriment in this new seasonal classic story. A holiday show for people of all ages and all faiths, Coney Island Christmas introduces us to Shirley Abramowitz, a young Jewish girl who, much to her parents’ displeasure, is cast as Jesus in the school’s Christmas pageant. As Shirley, now much older, recounts the memorable to her great-granddaughter, the story comes to life and captures a timeless and universal tale of holiday traditions.
Those needing more information, unable to attend the audition but interested in auditioning, or being part of the production crew, should contact John H. Hulse at 302-245-4147.
Coney Island Christmas is presented through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service (www.dramatists.com).
Second Street Players values diversity and inclusion in casting, and in all other areas of production.
The show is supported, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowments of the Arts. The Division promotes Delaware arts events on DelawareScene.com.
Coney Island Christmas Character Descriptions:
(character ages are guidelines)
Shirley Abramowitz: a very old Jewish woman, yet spry. Shirley plays not only her kindly wise self but the cantankerous Mrs. Kornblum in flashback sequence.
Young Shirley: the above Shirley Abramowitz as a 12 year old living in 1935 Brooklyn, New York. She is an extrovert: self-confident, bright, and assertive, and she has a loud speaking voice.
Clara: Shirley’s great granddaughter, age 12, living in the modern-day world. A typical pre-teen. She is bright and assertive like Young Shirley, but respectful of her elders. During the play, she is suffering from a mild cold.
Mr. Misha Abramowitz: Shirley’s kindly father, age 45. A Jewish immigrant and store owner grateful for the diversity of his new country. He is philosophical and has a corny sense of humor.
Mrs. Clara Abramowitz: Shirley’s mother, age 40, somewhat stern but ultimately kindhearted. She is less certain than her husband of assimilation into this country’s ways and is struggling to hold on to her own Jewish identity.
Mr. Hilton: the school drama teacher, age 35. He is a friendly and eager soul but is unaware that he is in love with Miss Glacé.
Miss Glacé: the school music teacher, age 28. She is from France and has a French accent. She is musical and creative. Lovely, and in love with Mr. Hilton.
Evie: Young Shirley’s best friend. A typical 12-year-old young girl in 1935.
Jackie Sauerfeld: Shirley’s crush, also 12 years old
Ira Pushkov: the wisenheimer, age 12
Various additional Classmates, age 12: Anna Ling, Giuseppe Sabatino, Henry Brown, Lester, and other classmates
